Some parents dream of their kids becoming doctors or lawyers. Ha! Not me. I’m the proud mam of a punk rock bassist.

“I just wanted to thank, and compliment, you for your wonderful work ‘Chinglish’. My two daughters are both English but are growing up in Italy and have both read your book. It made them feel more normal when having those moments living in another culture when you feel like you’re completely abnormal!

In particular my younger daughter, who hadn’t been the most motivated reader, read your book with an eagerness that I’ve never seen before and now she’s got the reading bug, which we’re so pleased about. In her words ‘you’re the best writer ever’!

...she could never find her way into the world of books, until she read ‘Chinglish’. After so many abandoned efforts this was the book that unlocked the door for her. I don’t know why exactly, relating to the idea of being a stranger in a strange land, or in her words ‘it’s just an amazing book by the best novelist’ whatever it was, it has now opened up this world to her and her tower of books is growing at a similar pace to her sisters. So, thank you for the gift of your writing.”

Her dad’s asked if I could write her a letter, so of course it’s a hell yes. So proud of the good this book’s done, especially for all those ex-reluctant readers out there.

Just caught the tail end but Happy World Book Day everyone! 📚

I spent the day at Francis Holland school talking to yr7, yr8 and did a careers talk with the 6th formers too.

I’ve not done the ‘Chinglish’ talk for a while cos I’ve been busy writing the sequel, but it was interesting to see how my perspective changes on it every year. I’ve got a lot more compassion for my teen self now and focus more on the positives and what today’s young people can take from them.

Got to thank head librarian Kate for being the best host (I got the Frozen mug!), and all the brilliant students for adding to the sunshine😎

HAPPY 10th @empathylabuk 🥳

I met some exceptional souls including the new MD @imogen_bond_ (here with author/artist @jionsheibani above!)

There’s a billion reasons why Empathy Lab are ace. Mainly because they do serious science behind empathy and are on a mish to teach the skills to our next generations through reading.

Atm there’s around 250 children’s authors and illustrators involved and the message reaches up to a million kids. So if you’re a teacher, librarian, children’s book creator, check out their training courses and get on board (they’re aiming for 2 million kids next year!)
